Luke 10:21-24

Luke 10:21-24

21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.

24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

Luke 10:21-24: Verse-by-Verse Analysis

Verse 21: “At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.'”

Jesus is filled with joy through the Holy Spirit. He praises God the Father. He acknowledges God as the Lord of heaven and earth. Jesus notes that God has hidden divine truths from the wise and learned. Instead, these truths are revealed to “little children,” symbolizing the humble and open-hearted. This pleases God.

Verse 22: “‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.'”

Jesus declares that all authority has been given to Him by the Father. The unique relationship between the Father and the Son is emphasized. Only the Father truly knows the Son, and only the Son truly knows the Father. This intimate knowledge is extended to those whom Jesus chooses to reveal the Father.

Verse 23: “Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, ‘Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.'”

Jesus speaks privately to His disciples. He calls them blessed. They are fortunate to witness His works and teachings firsthand. This is a unique privilege.

Verse 24: “‘For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.'”

Jesus explains the significance of their experience. Many prophets and kings longed to see and hear what the disciples are experiencing. They anticipated the Messiah but did not witness His coming. The disciples are living in a momentous time.
