Luke 1:31-33: Verse-by-Verse Analysis
Verse 31: “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.”
This verse is part of the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary. Gabriel tells Mary that she will conceive a child. This is a miraculous event, as Mary is a virgin. The name “Jesus” is significant. It means “The Lord saves” or “Yahweh is salvation.” This name indicates the child’s future role in God’s plan for humanity.
Verse 32: “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David.”
Gabriel describes the future greatness of Jesus. “Son of the Most High” signifies a special relationship with God. This title emphasizes Jesus’ divine nature. The reference to the “throne of his father David” connects Jesus to the Davidic line. This fulfills Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah coming from David’s lineage. It also indicates Jesus’ future role as a king.
Verse 33: “And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
This verse speaks of Jesus’ eternal reign. “House of Jacob” refers to the people of Israel. Jesus’ reign is not temporary; it is everlasting. This eternal kingdom contrasts with earthly kingdoms, which rise and fall. The promise of an unending kingdom fulfills the prophecy in Daniel 7:14. It assures believers of Jesus’ ultimate authority and eternal rule.
