Luke 1:30-33: Verse-by-Verse Analysis
Verse 30: “And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.”
The angel Gabriel reassures Mary. He tells her not to be afraid. This is a common angelic greeting in the Bible. Gabriel informs Mary that she has found favor with God. This means she is chosen for a special purpose.
Verse 31: “And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.”
Gabriel delivers the astonishing news. Mary will conceive a child. This child will be a son. She is to name him Jesus. The name Jesus means “The Lord saves.” This indicates his future role in salvation.
Verse 32: “He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:”
Gabriel describes the child’s future. He will be great. He will be called the Son of the Highest, signifying his divine nature. God will give him the throne of David. This connects Jesus to the Davidic line, fulfilling Old Testament prophecy.
Verse 33: “And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”
Gabriel continues with a promise. Jesus will reign over the house of Jacob forever. This means his rule will be eternal. His kingdom will never end. This emphasizes the everlasting nature of Jesus’ kingship.
